Since 1993, Friends of the Smokies has been helping to assist the National Park Service in its mission to preserve and protect Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Friends is both a fundraising and awareness raising partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and also recruits volunteers to assist with needed projects.
Our role in the 75th Anniversary celebration is to promote awareness of the needs of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is the nation’s most-visited national park, but which does not benefit from entrance fees. We will seek assistance from individuals, corporations and foundations to provide funding for the Park’s 75th celebration. We will also ask the public to help us reach our fundraising goals for the Park’s 75th Anniversary Signature Projects, in order to continue the preservation of the Park’s special places and the life within them for the next 75 years…and beyond. Over the last four years, Friends of the Smokies has provided more than $5 million to support educational programs, natural resource conservation, historic preservation, and wildlife protection in the Smokies.
Since 2003, Friends of the Smokies has assisted the Park with more than $1 million to aid in the fight against the destructive hemlock woolly adelgid, which threatens the eastern hemlock trees.
Annual support from Friends of the Smokies for the Parks As Classrooms program gives thousands of students in communities surrounding the Park opportunities to learn about the tremendous scientific wonders and cultural treasures located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
