1982: The World’s Fair comes to Knoxville and the park braces for a spike in visitation, which does not materialize completely, although increased bus traffic from the event forces the building of the bus parking lot at the Sugarlands Visitor Center.
May 30, 1982: The first known documented observation of coyotes in the Park in Cades Cove. The canine species that has migrated from the Western US begins to slowly fill a niche left unfilled by the loss of wolves in our area, preying on small game animals.

1984: Four peregrine falcons, a species last seen in the park in the 1940s, are released in the Greenbrier section of the park.

Hear the Falcon
1984: The park celebrates its 50th anniversary. The year is dotted with special events including a concert by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in Cades Cove with then Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexandar as a special guest pianist for the performance.
1986: Ten river otters are released into the Abrams Creek near Cades Cove. Otters, once trapped and hunted to extinction for their coats quickly acclimated to the Smokies and after release of several batches throughout the park, the species is doing well.

April 12-13 & 19-20 1986: Large Crowds occurred at NFG on the weekend to see Halley’s Comet.
1987: NPS co-founder and second director Horace Albright, for whom Albright Grove is named, dies in Los Angeles at 97.
